My thoughts thus far

Caribou (‘Welcome!’ in Swahili and other Bantu languages, such as Chichewa) to my blog! My name is Emily and I have just wrapped up a placement at Dzaleka Refugee Camp about an hour outside of Lilongwe. On my last day in Malawi, my colleagues heartily thanked me for coming to volunteer with Jesuit Refugee Service and unexpectedly presented me with a gift of pretty jewelery made by refugees in the camp. My boss then asked whether I felt that I had benefited from my experiences in the country.

What a question!

I’ve benefited in so many ways from my three months in southern Africa. Its hard to sum up all of the changes that must have occurred in me and my understanding of the world from this chance-of-a-lifetime opportunity. Its difficult to explain and hard to know where to start… I will have to think long and hard about it.

Will write again soon!

  1. Hi, Emily. How are you?

I sent to you a e-mail a couple of weeks ago.
I’ve been working in Dzaleka for 2 months and
I’ll stay here until the end of October.
I notice that you’ve been working here too, haven’t you?
So, I’d like to exchange some experiences with you,
to know more what you did here…
    So, please, contact me back…

    Best regards,
    Bruno Marcorio
