After three months I have left the home I made at Gram Vikas. It seems surreal but I also feel like it is time. I have collected a lot of information over the last few months and I am feeling ready to go home to the winter in Canada and write out my thesis.
This internship has provided many wonderful and important lessons. I learned a lot about myself and my coping mechanisms and also about working in small NGOs. I am really grateful for the experience and it was really nice to have a place to call home in India.
I am now in Chennai getting some last minute things done before I fly out of India on Saturday.
Some more lessons learned (in a general manner):
- BE FLEXIBLE!
- Eat whatever is given to you if you are visiting someone’s house or village. It would be impolite to refuse, even if you have strict dietary rules at home.
- Laugh it off – As an outsider it’s easy to be caught in some uncomfortable situations. The best thing to do is laugh!
It’s all done! I can’t believe it. For those of you still in the field – I hope you’re loving it! And for the rest of us going home or already at home, I hope your internships have left lasting impressions.
