Life in Peru

Life in Peru has been pretty interesting so far. I have managed to develop a network with another student in the ‘Students for Development’ program as well as with some other students working on different projects here in Peru. As all of us are women we have all be experiencing the differences in gender relations. Interactions with some men here on a social level is really challenging due to aspects of Machista culture in Peruvian men. It is sometimes a challenge to communicate, but it has been a great learning experience and I have been learning a lot about the gender dynamics here through conversations with Peruvian women. I find myself surrounded here by a group of such strong women (Peruvian and Foreign) and it makes me proud to be a woman-I feel very supported.

I am finding there is always something interesting to do here. I have been taking advantage of different cultural and artistic events to learn more about Peruvian culture. I went with a friend to ‘La Noche de Arte 2009’ a couple of weeks ago and it was interesting to see the work of so many different Peruvian artists. There were also dancers at the event so it was an opportunity to see the different styles of Peruvian dances.

I have also been taking pottery classes and it has been a great experience learning traditional and modern pottery techniques. My current challenge is trying to find a way to bring all the stuff I am making back to Canada….
