A Short Introduction to Kendra

Hi:

My name is Kendra Mellish, and like the other posters on this site I was an SFD intern this past Fall.  I was placed in Tamale, a town/city in the Northern Region of Ghana.  I was there from mid-October until about two days ago.

I was working on a CIDA funded project through AUCC’s partnership branch.  The project, ‘Developing Rural Entrepreneurs Project’ has both ‘academic’ and a ‘community’ pillars.  As such, there are a ton of partners involved– a Canadian University and NGO and then in each of the regions of Ghana (Northern, Upper East, and Upper West) there is also an educational institution (polytechnics) and an NGO partner.  Rather than going into all of the details here you can find more information at NSAC’s (Nova Scotia Agricultural College) website: http://nsac.ca/international/International_Projects/ghana/ghana.asp  My placement was at the ‘educational institution’ in Northern Region: Tamale Polytechnic.

Internet was pretty scarce in Tamale, so I didn’t contribute at all to this site while I was away; however I did send weekly « I’m alive and this is what I did » updates to friends and family while I was gone.  Now that I am back in Nova Scotia, with internet access, I am posting those updates for anyone who would care to read them.

I will say that I had the most amazing three months of my life while in Tamale.  I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried like a BABY on the first leg of my plane journey home, and I hope that these posts are able to convey even a little bit of just how wonderful Tamale and her people are (both the residents of the town and the ‘visiting workers’).

Enjoy.

Kendra
